Glossary of terms Blanqueamiento/whitening/blood cleansing: The castes were made of people of color aspiring to become White - it became a long social and genetic process. For instance, a quinterón was a person who had become and accepted as a White; a cuarterón had some more "genetic cleansing" to undergo, before reaching the desired social and racial status. (Friedemann, Nina S. de.1993:64) Meztizaje: Racial mixture among the three ethnic groups present in Colombia: Native Americans, Blacks and Whites - Europeans. Alabaos: A Spanish tradition sang by the Afro-Colombian communities. The alabaos are usually sung during wakes, and on saints days. (Ocampo López, Javier, 1984) Arrullos: Cradle chants, derived from the Spanish Christmas carols and medieval chants. (Ocampo López, Javier, 1984) Currulao: A typical dance of the Pacific lowlands interpreted with native instruments, such as the marimba, the cununo, the bombo (drums) and the guasá (é). (Ocampo López, Javier, 1984) Matachines: Traditional Moorish festivity brought from Spain. It was incorporated with religious celebrations such as the Corpus Christi in various regions of Colombia. In Guápi, however, the Matachines are celebrated on December 28th, day of the Innocents. During this celebration, people dress up in carnival-like customs. (Friedmann, Susana, 1982) |
